VAICO particulate filters: Your solution for clean and efficient diesel

The particulate filter is one of the most important components in diesel vehicles. It ensures that harmful soot particles are filtered out of the exhaust gases before they are released into the environment.

At VAICO, we offer high-quality repair solutions for particulate filters that guarantee a long service life and optimum performance. A functioning particulate filter is not only crucial for compliance with legal emission regulations, but also helps to protect the environment and our health.

How a particle filter works

A particulate filter works by passing the exhaust gases through a fine filter material that traps the soot particles. These remain in the filter and are later burnt off during the journey in a process known as regeneration. Key components of the particulate filter are the filter material itself, a catalytic converter to reduce nitrogen oxides and various sensors that monitor the effectiveness of the filter. They ensure that your diesel vehicle remains clean and efficient.

Problems and defects with the particulate filter

A particulate filter can cause problems or become defective for various reasons. One of the most common causes is clogging, which is often caused by short journeys during which the filter cannot regenerate properly. But that is by no means all:

  • Problems in the intake area: Leaks or errors in the air mass calculation can lead to an insufficient air-fuel mixture, which impairs the function of the particulate filter.
  • Problems with the injection: Defective injectors, a defective high-pressure pump or errors in the mixture preparation can also lead to the filter clogging more quickly.
  • Problems with exhaust gas aftertreatment: A defective EGR valve or an excessive amount of exhaust gas entering the combustion chamber and enriching the mixture can put additional strain on the filter.
  • Excessive thermal load: Overheating of the particulate filter due to high temperatures can lead to irreparable damage.

The symptoms of a defective particulate filter are often clearly noticeable: loss of power, increased fuel consumption and warning lights on the dashboard are typical signs that the filter is no longer doing its job properly.

Consequential damage from a defective particulate filter

A defective particulate filter can affect more than just the filter itself – the effects can damage the entire engine and exhaust system. One of the most serious problems is a defective turbocharger caused by excessive exhaust back pressure. If the particulate filter is clogged, the pressure in the exhaust system increases and can overload the turbocharger. This not only leads to a loss of power and increased fuel consumption, but in the worst case can also completely destroy the turbocharger. Such damage is often associated with expensive repairs that drive up the operating costs of the vehicle.

Cleaning options for the particle filter

There are ways to clean the particulate filter, for example by using additives to dissolve the deposits. This method can help in the short term, but is often only a temporary solution. The basic problem usually remains and there is a high probability that the filter will soon become blocked again. Cleaning should therefore only be considered as an emergency solution and not as a long-term strategy.

Why replacing the particulate filter is often the better solution

Replacing the particulate filter is the better solution in many cases, as it restores the full performance of the vehicle and prevents future damage. Compared to cleaning, replacement offers long-term benefits as it gets to the root of the problem. Although the cost of a new filter may initially seem higher, it can quickly pay for itself by avoiding further repairs.
