Rain and light sensors from VEMO – Clear visibility in all weathers.

In today's automotive technology, assistance systems play a central role in increasing driving comfort and safety. One particularly important system is the rain and light sensor, which takes over various automatic functions in the vehicle and thus relieves the driver.

The high-quality rain and light sensors from VEMO in OE quality are specially developed for these tasks and offer reliable performance even under extreme conditions.

How do rain and light sensors work?

Rain sensors detect moisture on the windscreen and automatically activate the windscreen wipers when the wiper switch is set to intermittent. As soon as the rain sensor registers precipitation on the windscreen, the driver no longer has to intervene manually. The sensor is integrated in the windscreen outside the field of vision and uses infrared rays to measure the wetting of the windscreen. The heavier the rain hits the windscreen, the more the infrared rays are refracted, which leads to an adjustment of the wiping speed.

Light sensors work in a similar way: they measure the ambient light and the light ahead and switch the headlights on or off automatically as required. Especially in situations such as driving through a tunnel or when dusk sets in, the driver is relieved and can concentrate fully on the road. The sensors work in real time and adapt to the current light conditions.

Advantages of rain and light sensors

VEMO offers rain and light sensors as a combined unit. This intelligent technology reacts automatically to changing weather and light conditions by controlling both the windscreen wipers and the headlights. This significantly increases safety and comfort, especially in the event of sudden weather changes such as rain showers or darkness.

  • Fast response: wipers and headlights automatically adapt to the weather conditions to provide the driver with optimum support.
  • Focus on the road: Automated settings minimise distractions as the driver does not have to intervene manually.
  • Focus on the road: Automated settings minimise distractions as the driver does not have to intervene manually.
  • Efficient use of energy: The wiper intensity adapts to the rain and the headlights are only activated when required – this saves energy and extends the service life of the lighting.

What happens in the event of a sensor failure?

Like all electronic components, rain and light sensors can also fail. External influences such as dirt, stone chips, cable breaks or calibration errors can lead to problems with rain and light sensors. Possible symptoms of a sensor failure are irregular wiping movements, faulty light control or warning messages in the on-board computer. In such cases, the sensor must be replaced in order to restore the optimum function and safety of the vehicle.
