Purpose

The ignition coil is located either above the spark plug or connected to it via an ignition cable. It has one of the most important tasks in engine control: the ignition coil must be able to generate a high voltage continuously and at very short intervals so that the spark plug can trigger an ignition spark.

Symptoms

  • Engine does not start
  • Engine failure after start
  • Engine does not idle smoothly

Causes of failure

  • Broken housing
  • Coils are internally burnt
  • Oxidised contacts
  • Broken attachment clips
  • Worn-out electronics

Consequential damages

  • Increased wear of the spark plugs due to misfiring; more deposits form on the spark plug
  • Increased wear and power loss of the entire engine due to misfiring
  • Poor to no ignition of the mixture in the combustion chamber
  • Catalyst damage due to a high quantity of unburned fuel
