Tech-Info: Ignition Coils
How does an ignition coil work? The VEMO experts let you know everything about purpose, symptoms, causes of failure and consequential damages of ignition coils.
TECH-INFO
Purpose
The ignition coil is located either above the spark plug or connected to it via an ignition cable. It has one of the most important tasks in engine control: the ignition coil must be able to generate a high voltage continuously and at very short intervals so that the spark plug can trigger an ignition spark.
Symptoms
- Engine does not start
- Engine failure after start
- Engine does not idle smoothly
- Check engine light remains on
- Increased fuel consumption
- Loss of power
Causes of failure
- Broken housing
- Coils are internally burnt
- Oxidised contacts
- Broken attachment clips
- Worn-out electronics
Consequential damages
- Increased wear of the spark plugs due to misfiring; more deposits form on the spark plug
- Increased wear and power loss of the entire engine due to misfiring
- Poor to no ignition of the mixture in the combustion chamber
- Catalyst damage due to a high quantity of unburned fuel
