For a safe cold start the ottomotor needs a “rich mixture”. This means that more fuel is injected. As a result, large amounts of carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons are produced during the cold start phase. The lambda control system and the catalytic converter have not reached their operating temperature during this phase yet. Thus, these harmful exhaust gas components can escape into the environment without aftertreatment.

In order to avoid this and to reduce the pollutants during the cold start phase, oxygen-rich ambient air (“secondary air”) is blown directly into the exhaust manifold behind the exhaust valves using the secondary air system. This results in a post-oxidation (“post-combustion”) of the pollutants to harmless carbon dioxide and water. The resulting heat additionally heats the catalyst and shortens the time until the lambda control is started.
